What Is Chiropractic?

The word chiropractic stems from the Greek words cheir and prakticos, which mean hand and practitioner or skillful use respectively. Therefore, a chiropractor is a practitioner that skillfully uses their hands.

This term is developed by the modern founder of chiropractic, D.D. Palmer.
In 1895, a man named Daniel David Palmer, a magnetic healer from Davenport, IA, was working in his office when the maintenance person, Harvey Lillard came in. Harvey had been deaf for the last 17 years, following an accident in which he heard a pop in his back. Since then his hearing has become progressively worse. After an examination by D.D., a hard lump was felt near Harvey’s spine. He found that the bones were not moving properly with each other. So, D.D. placed his hands on his spine and thrusted the bone back into place, restoring proper motion between the two segments. After his adjustment Harvey was able to hear the wagons on the cobblestone street. After only three days Harvey’s hearing was fully restored. D.D. later called this type of healing Chiropractic.

Chiropractors are exceptional at finding and correcting subluxations, or minor misalignments in the spine. These misalignments are what cause the nervous system and in turn the musculoskeletal system as well as the rest of the body to not function well and in turn cause aches, pains, numbness, tingling or many other potential symptoms to develop. Chiropractors administer adjustments to realign the spine causing the Nervous system to function more efficiently. If the nervous system is functioning properly the aches, pain or other symptoms will subside.

Because the nervous system controls the entire body, when a subluxation is present a wide array of symptoms can develop. This is why chiropractic works for so many different types of ailments. Chiropractic does not cure or eliminate all diseases or conditions but it does work to restore the misalignments of the spine and the miscommunication of the nervous system. Once the communication is restored the body can do miraculous things to heal itself.

Sometimes no matter how strong the body’s defense is against ailments, the body cannot heal itself. This is where other medicine can do exceptionally well. Medical Doctors have a wide array of medicine and surgical options at their disposal that they can administer to effectively help the body to regain control.
